Celebrating the autumnal equinox
The autumnal equinox is here and it is time to lean into the slowing down of the season. It is also so important to celebrate our harvest from this past spring and summer.
Harvest comes from the Old English word for autumn, Haerfest, and means to reap, gather and store what has been grown. This season is associated with abundance and joy as it is the culmination of many months of hard work.
At Flying Fibers, we lean heavily into celebrating the equinox, as it is the start of the cooler seasons and so important to analyze and appreciate all that we have done over the last 9 months.
What do you do to celebrate the equinox? We have a couple of ideas if you are looking for inspiration.
Cast on a new project!
A time to reap, gather and store what has been grown may be something as simple as grabbing some yarn and needles or a crochet hook and starting a new project. Fall is usually when most farmers get their spring clip yarn back from the mills, so there are lots of lovely options available. You can find our full line of local yarns here.
Take a walk and observe the changing landscape!
It’s okay if you don’t have a big garden to put to rest, or a bunch of sheep to prepare for winter. Just taking a walk through your neighborhood is a great way to observe the changing landscape and see how the trees, grasses, flowers, and wildlife are adjusting to the season. I know for a fact that I saw a couple of chipmunks gathering food the other day which is something I did not see in the spring or summer!
Decorate your home!
This idea feels cliche, but decorating your home and adding some autumnal decorations can help your mindset shift and get ready for those cozy evenings at home since it gets darker earlier. Looking for a super cozy decoration that will help you push through the dark and cold months? Our British SheepSkins and Wool Travel Blankets are the perfect addition to your home.
Get your fall candle line-up ready!
Nothing feels more cozy than picking out a couple candles that you want to burn during the evenings after coming home from work. Pick out a couple of fall scents, or even just basic beeswax candles, and get ready to be mindful when lighting them. Maybe even create a small display of found objects from your walk that meant something to you, and let the gratitude of the changing seasons fill your spirit!
Eat local!
This one also feels obvious, but if you’re a meal planner like me, changing your weekly dinners to reflect the fall veggie offerings is a great way to celebrate the harvests that farmers have worked so hard on! We have some awesome local veggie stands and farm markets in our area, so if you’re making a trip to the shop, consider swinging by one of these stores too while you’re visiting the beautiful Susquehanna River Valley!
